LBBW enters Korean market
May 15th, 2008
- Korea is one of the most important trading partners for German companies
- LBBW expands its international network to 26 locations
- Dr. Kaemmerer, Member of LBBW’s Board of Managing Directors: "With our new branch in Seoul we support German companies entering the important Korean market."
Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) now has a presence in Seoul, South Korea, following the opening of a branch there. It is the second German institution with a full-scale branch in the country. The branch's main task is to provide services to German mid-sized companies and their Korean subsidiaries and to engage in business with Korean multinational conglomerates – the so called chaebols.
"In opening our branch in Seoul we are responding to the challenges of the market and the requirements of our customers. At the same time, we use the opportunities provided by the regional capital markets," explained Dr. Peter Kaemmerer, member of LBBW's Board of Managing Directors with responsibility for international business, at the opening. LBBW in Seoul offers German companies financing in Korean won and related currency hedging transactions as well as national and international payments services.
Kaemmerer explained the concept as follows: "Thanks to long-term customer relationships that are based on trust, we are able to provide quick financing at favourable terms – without any currency risk for the customer." LBBW will also advise on corporate start-ups, acquisitions and disposals and will support customers entering the market and in their search for suitable locations. If required, it will also provide advice and act as intermediary if contacts to Korean businesses, authorities and banks are sought.
Later, LBBW will also build up business with Korean financial institutions and the public sector. It also plans to enter into the derivatives business and provide syndicated and structured forms of financing.
With the new branch in Seoul the bank has expanded its international network to 26 locations. Besides the branches in London, New York and Singapore and the representative offices, the network also includes the German Centres. In Asia, LBBW already has a presence in Hanoi, Jakarta, Mumbai, Beijing, Shanghai, Singapore and Tokyo.
Korea is a strong trading partner for German companies
Today, the Republic of Korea is one of the fastest growing industrial states in the world. In 2007, German exporters recorded a disproportionate 19.1 percent rate of increase in trade with the former "tiger state". In recent years, the Korean economy has been one of the most important trading partners for German, and especially Baden-Württemberg, companies from the shipbuilding, electronics, steel and automobile sectors as well as from biotechnology, nanotechnology and information technology.
The Korean Sung-Goo Lee will head the LBBW branch in Seoul. He has had many years of experience doing business with chaebols. The first point of contact for German companies is René Wittenberg, who is the deputy head of branch.
